As part of the Dynamics 365 software lifecycle, Microsoft has opted for continuous updates (Continuous Updates). This means that the foundation for these updates was laid with the last „Major Release“ in April – Application Version 10.0 (One Version). Since April, a Platform Update has now been released monthly, containing the latest updates and hotfixes. Originally, the plan was to provide the updates 12x per year; in early June 2019 it was communicated that the months of March, June, September and December would be skipped (thus 8x per year). As a customer, you have the option to skip a maximum of three consecutive updates. That is, you must switch/update to the current Platform Version at least 2x per year. The coming months will show how stable these updates are, or how many so-called regressions/errors creep in. The goal is surely to move in the direction of the Windows updates, where you as a customer/user no longer really notice an update and only errors have been fixed. Nevertheless, a certain amount of testing effort will probably precede each update. To automate the tests, the Regression Suite Automation Tool can be used, which we will present in more detail in one of our next blog posts.
